Welcome to the ICOM-CC Working Group on Wood, Furniture, and Lacquer webinar!
Our focus will be on "Innovative Developments in Conservation Materials and Protocols for Wood, Furniture, and Lacquer Artifacts."
This session will explore the latest advancements and challenges in conserving these culturally significant objects, with particular emphasis on sustainable treatments and innovative techniques. As stewards of cultural heritage, it is crucial to balance preservation and longevity while employing environmentally sustainable practices that uphold the authenticity and historical significance of these artifacts.
Together, we will discuss cutting-edge developments in conservation materials and protocols, focusing on innovative approaches and the challenges of conservation. Through case studies, we will showcase these innovative techniques in real-world scenarios, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange among professionals in the conservation community.
This webinar will also provide a platform to identify key challenges and opportunities in wood, furniture, and lacquer conservation, particularly in the context of sustainability. By encouraging dialogue and collaboration, we aim to promote environmentally responsible practices that preserve these precious artifacts for generations to come.

- Benedetta Paolino – Art Conservator, ICOM Member, and Ph.D. Candidate in Environment, Design, and Innovation, University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli, ITALY. Her presentation is titled: “Green Conservation of Wood-Based Artworks Through Essential Oils: Research Trends and Innovative Applications for Anti-Fungal Treatments.”
- Dr. Zarah Korb – Assistant/Postdoc, Faculty of Philosophy and Natural Sciences, Department of Chemistry, University of Basel, SWITZERLAND.
- Dr. Monireh Moradienayat – Conservation of Cultural Heritage, Tabriz Islamic Art University, Tabriz. IRAN (Dr. Zarah and Dr. Monireh will presenting together on presenting “Sustainable Conservation of Wood: From Theory to Practice.
- Genevieve Tobin – Andrew W. Mellon Fellow, Scientific Research Department, National Gallery of Art, Washington DC, USA. Her presentation is titled: “Innovative Approaches to Cleaning Gilded Decorative Wooden Surfaces: xPVAc-borax/BDBA gels.”
- Matthew Cushman – George F. & Sybil H. Fuller Conservator in Charge Worcester Art Museum, USA. His presentation titled: “Flexible, Low-Cost, Sustainable… and Edible? Developing new hydrogels for conservation cleaning.”
