FOCUS ON SUSTAINABILITY: Discussion on wet cleaning with saponins in textile conservation
Saponins derived from the bark, roots and fruit have been commonly used over the centuries in different cultures. Saponin has come up in recent discussions as a green alternative to chemically made surfactants in textile conservation.

The session will be moderated by the ICOM-CC Textiles Working Group Assistant Coordinator Deepshikha Kalsi from The Textile Conservation Studio in New Delhi, India and Coordinator Sarah Benson from the National Museum of Sweden.

Speakers:
Viola Ceppetelli, Senior Textile Conservator, Tapestries and Textiles Restoration Laboratory, Vatican Museums - Vatican City
Viola Ceppetelli studied in Fano, in 2005 she won the public competition at the Opificio delle Pietre Dure (OPD) in Florence, Institute of Advanced professional training and in 2008 she obtained a degree in Art Restoration of Tapestries. Since 2011 she has been working as senior textile conservator in the Vatican Museums.
Laura Pace Morino, Senior Textile Conservator, Tapestries and Textiles Restoration Laboratory, Vatican Museums - Vatican City
Laura Pace Morino studied in Rome, in 2001 she won the public competition at ISCR, Institute of Advanced professional training and in 2005 she obtained a degree in Art Restoration of Ancient Textiles. Since 2006 she has been working as senior textile conservator in the Vatican Museums.
Petra Czerwinske, Textile Conservator, Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum – Kulturen der Welt - Germany
Petra Czerwinske has worked for over two decades as a textile conservator at the Rautenstrauch-Joest Museum in Cologne, Germany and internationally. Her career began with training as a parament weaver and embroiderer. After a 3-year fellowship at the renowned Swiss Abegg-Stiftung Foundation, she graduated from Cologne Technical University. She conducted extensive research on the structure and use of saponin as part of her diploma thesis.
Jasmine Sartor, Textile Conservator, Moshe Tabibnia Gallery - Italy
Jasmine Sartor studied Conservation of Cultural Heritage in Florence, at Opificio delle Pietre Dure Institute, with the specialization in textile and leather artefacts. During her career, she collaborated with several textile conservators and worked for many museums in Italy. In 2020 she moved to Milan and became the textile conservator of the Moshe Tabibnia Gallery. Here she’s gaining experience and knowledge especially with rugs and ancient carpets, an area about which she is very passionate.
Rini Templeton, Textile Conservator, Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts - India
Rini Hazel Templeton has a PhD in Textile Conservation from the National Museum Institute, New Delhi, and a Master's in Preservation, Conservation, and Heritage Management from the Delhi Institute of Heritage and Management. With over a decade of experience, she played key roles in G20 Cultural Corridor Exhibition and India's Museo Expo 2023 in 2023. She managed ICCROM's COLLASIA Field Project (2021-22), focusing on reviving the art of Rafoo. Currently, she works as a Project Associate at the Department of Conservation, Indira Gandhi National Centre for The Arts, New Delhi.
Caterina Celada, Textile Conservator, Museum of London - United Kingdon
Caterina Celada-Prior graduated from the University of Glasgow (UK) in 2020 with an MPhil in textile conservation, following an MA in Conservation from the University of Barcelona (Spain). With experience gained in Spain, the UK, and Switzerland, she currently serves as a textile conservator at the Museum of London, UK.
Bappaditya Biswas, Textile Artist, Founder - Bailou - India
Bappaditya Biswas is one of India's foremost textile experts and has been creating masterly weaves over the last decade and more. These weaves have redefined Bengal handloom and given the textiles of the state a new look and feel. He has created the brand Bailou as well as the iconic store Byloom in Kolkata. Bappaditya has travelled the world to study the traditions of weaving and dyeing and one of his weaves has won the Unesco Seal of Excellence.
