Topic: The Study and Conservation of 20th century frescoes

The Murals, Stone and Rock Art Working Group coordination team is pleased to announce our next Working Group Zoom meeting on 24 April at 5pm GMT (London). The theme of this Zoom meeting will be conservation of twentieth century frescoes.

The early twentieth century saw a revival of fresco techniques with well-known artists including Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros, and Gino Severini among many others practicing and experimenting with painting into fresh plaster to create large scale murals for public and private spaces. Many of these murals are now being studied and preserved, and they present complex and challenging issues of conservation. The objective of the meeting will be to exchange information on the materials and techniques of execution and the conservation challenges of wall paintings painted in the fresco technique using both traditional and innovative methods and materials.

Colleagues are invited to submit a mini-abstract describing a project for a 5-7 minute presentation. Up to 7 presentations will be selected by the Murals, Stone, and Rock Art Working Group Coordination Team. The lightning round of talks will be followed by questions and answers and discussion.

With this session we are hoping to cultivate exchange of information and experience to broaden the understanding of this technique as it was used in the 20th century in different parts of the world.

Please provide a title, author(s) and presenter, and a mini-abstract with a brief description of the presentation no longer than 200 words, to lrainer@getty.edu by 24 February 2025

The Coordination Team will select the set of presentations and notify presenters by 24 March 2025 in time to prepare a presentation for the Zoom meeting on 24 April 2025.

We are looking forward to an exciting and diverse set of presentations exploring the topic of 20^th century frescoes.
