APOYOnline to establish the ‘José Orraca Memorial Fund’ to support photographic conservation in Latin America

José Orraca was a pioneering figure in photographic conservation, leaving an incalculable legacy to the field of cultural heritage preservation which has not been forgotten since his passing ten years ago. To honor the contributions of this leading figure in heritage preservation, APOYOnline, the Association for Heritage Preservation of the Americas, is pleased to announce the José Orraca Memorial Fund, which will be used for the first time for the September 2019 APOYOnline 30th Anniversary Conference and Workshop in Heritage Preservation in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

A pioneer in the field of photographic conservation, José Orraca was appointed as the first professional conservator of photographs at the George Eastman House in 1972. He was a dedicated educator, demonstrated by positions at the Cooperstown Conservation Program, and the Winterthur/University of Delaware Art Conservation Program, where he implemented the first graduate-level photograph conservation curriculum. A generosity of knowledge and dedication to heritage preservation in Latin America was central along his career. His commitment to Latin American cultural heritage never wavered; he was a founding member of Apoyo (now APOYOnline), the Association for Heritage Preservation of the Americas.

The José Orraca Memorial Fund will support professional development activities in conservation of photographs among Latin American professionals.

Please consider donating to the José Orraca Memorial Fund to continue his legacy by supporting cultural heritage preservation in the Americas.
