Legal Issues in Conservation

Conservation professionals, in both museums and private practice, can face any number of legal issues in the course of their work. These issues may be related to the “routine” insurance and liability aspects of exhibition loans, but may also be related to more complex issues concerning copyright and the rights of living artists, forgeries, objects made of endangered species, anti-seizure laws, and objects with suspicious provenance. The Legal Issues in Conservation Working Group serves as an international network and forum providing information and experience which may be helpful to conservators as they carry out their legal and ethical responsibilities.
