“UPHOLSTERY+” Joint Interim Meeting, Krakow, May 13-18, 2007
The 2007 Joint Interim Meeting “UPHOLSTERY+” focused on (broadly understood) conservation of historic upholstery works. The four day meeting was organised by the ICOM-CC Leather and Related Materials, Textile, and Wood, Furniture, & Lacquer Working Groups in cooperation with the National Museum in Krakow, with support of the ICOM-Polish National Committee. The Conference was held under the honorary patronage of Tomasz Merta, Chief Conservator and the Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, and was co-funded by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, under the Operational Programme of the EU. The conference, which was attended by over 250 people from all over the world, took place in the new and very comfortable Collegium Maximum at Jagiellonian University, in the centre of Krakow.
The “UPHOLSTERY+” conference provided a platform for discussion and exchange of information between conservators, scientists, art historians, curators, archaeologists and all professionals interested in the conservation and preservation of leather, textiles, wood, furniture and lacquer. Speakers from Europe, the USA, Canada and Australia presented over 40 papers themed around the conservation and preservation of varied types of furnishing within collections. Papers focused on the multidisciplinary aspects of upholstery furniture and wall coverings conservation, which often require a cooperation between leather, textile, and wood conservation specialists. The participants had an opportunity to listen to the lecturers presenting interesting conservation projects, to become familiar with recent discoveries, research and technologies related to the topic of the conference, and to meet new colleagues who shared their interests and fascinations. The abstracts and selected proceedings of this meeting are available below and also on the ICOM-CC Leather and Related materials website. Publishing of additional abstracts and papers will be forthcoming.
